Followers Aren't the Same as an Audience You Own
Social media followers are valuable for discovery, but they are not the same as building real relationships. Learn the difference between reach and relationship, and how to turn attention into connection.
Imagine waking up tomorrow and discovering you have 10,000 new followers.
Sounds amazing, right?
But then ask yourself a few questions.
Would those people actually know you?
Would they trust you?
Would they open your emails?
Would they join your conversations?
Would they buy from you?
Would they even see your next post?
Here's the truth that took me too long to learn.
Follower count is not the number that matters most.
The Difference in Three Simple Words
Let me make this really simple.
A follower knows OF you.
An audience chooses to hear FROM you.
A community gets to know you AND each other.
That's it. That's the whole idea.
Someone clicking "follow" on Instagram does not mean you have a relationship with them. It means they saw something they liked. That's the beginning. Not the end.
Social Media Is Not the Enemy
I want to be really clear about something.
Social media is one of the best discovery tools we have.
Someone might find you through a Facebook post. They might watch your YouTube video. They might discover your TikTok, see you on LinkedIn, or scroll past your Instagram.
That's fantastic.
But here's the key idea I want you to remember.
Social media can be the introduction. It doesn't have to be the whole relationship.
The problem happens when we mistake reach for relationship. When we think that because someone follows us, we have a connection with them.
We don't. Not yet.
The Coffee Shop Problem
Let me give you an example.
Imagine you meet someone at a coffee shop. You have a great conversation. You laugh. You share ideas. They seem interested in what you do.
Then you both stand up, say "nice to meet you," and walk away.
No phone number. No email. No way to stay in touch.
You met them. But you didn't build a relationship.
Social media works the same way. People discover you every single day. They see your post. They watch your video. They read your article.
The question is: Where can they go if they want more?
What Happens Next?
This is the question that changed how I think about my business.
Someone discovers you. Great.
What happens next?
Maybe they see your post. Great.
What happens next?
Maybe they watch your video. Great.
What happens next?
Discovery needs a next step. Without one, you are hoping the algorithm shows them your content again. You are hoping they remember to search for you. You are hoping they happen to scroll past you in a feed that shows them hundreds of other people.
Hope is not a strategy.
Invite Them to Come Closer
Instead of always asking people to BUY NOW or BOOK A CALL, give them an easier next step.
Invite them to come closer.
That might mean:
Joining your email list
Joining your community
Reading another useful article
Attending a free event
Downloading a helpful resource
Joining a conversation
Asking a question
Not everyone who discovers you is ready to buy. That's okay. Give them somewhere to continue the relationship.
For me, that place is the Self Made Success Community. It's where people come to continue conversations that start in articles like this one.
The Simple Relationship Ladder
Here's a simple way to think about how people move closer to you.
Stranger
↓
Follower
↓
Audience
↓
Community
↓
Relationship
↓
Trust
↓
Customer
People move through this at different speeds. Some skip steps. This is not a rigid funnel. It's just a way to think about relationships.
The main lesson? Don't rush people from stranger to customer. Give them a place to get to know you.
Two Entrepreneurs. Very Different Situations.
Let me give you a quick example.
Entrepreneur A has 25,000 followers. Very little engagement. No email list. No community. Very few conversations.
Entrepreneur B has 1,000 followers. 300 email subscribers. 100 active community members. Regular conversations. People asking questions. People attending events. People recommending the business.
Which business has the stronger audience?
You already know the answer.
Connection matters more than raw follower count.
What "Own Your Audience" Really Means
I want to be careful with this phrase.
You don't literally own people. That's weird.
"Owning your audience" simply means having a direct way to stay connected that doesn't depend only on a social media feed.
Examples include:
Email subscribers
Community members
Customers who know where to find you
People who have raised their hand and said "yes, I want to hear from you"
The goal is not control. The goal is connection.
Why Community Changes Everything
Community gives people something social media often cannot.
A place to participate instead of only watch.
Inside a community, people can ask questions, share ideas, attend events, learn, help each other, share wins, join discussions, and build relationships with each other. Not just with you.
That's powerful.
That's why I spend time in the Self Made Success Community every week. It's where real conversations happen.
Your 5-Minute Audience Checkup
Here's a simple exercise. Take five minutes and answer these questions honestly.
Where do most people discover me?
After they discover me, where do I send them?
Do I have a direct way to stay connected with them?
Do they have somewhere they can ask questions or interact with me?
If social media disappeared tomorrow, would my audience know where to find me?
This isn't meant to scare you. It's meant to help you see one area you can improve.
Just One Next Step
Don't try to fix everything today.
Choose one next step.
Maybe it's adding a community invitation to your next article. Maybe it's adding an email signup to your website. Maybe it's inviting YouTube viewers somewhere specific. Maybe it's adding a clear next step to your social posts.
You don't have to rebuild your business today.
Just create one clearer path for people who want to come closer.
One Question for You
Before we wrap up, I have a question.
Where do most people discover you right now?
Facebook? YouTube? Instagram? TikTok? Google? Email? Somewhere else?
I'd love to hear your answer. Come share it inside the Self Made Success Community. It's a great place to continue this conversation and connect with other entrepreneurs who are building real relationships, not just chasing follower counts.
The Real Goal
Followers are great. Followers are the beginning, not the finish line.
The real goal is not to collect people.
It's to build relationships.
Use social media to get discovered. Then give the people who like what you do somewhere to come closer.
That's how you turn attention into connection.
That's how you build something that lasts. |
