Here is something AI has made incredibly easy: creating headlines.

Ask ChatGPT for a "viral" headline. Ask it for something "scroll-stopping" or "impossible to ignore." Within seconds, you will have options.

But here is the problem.

Those headlines all start to sound the same. And not in a good way.

The Infomercial Effect

Have you noticed what happens when you ask AI for attention-grabbing headlines?

Suddenly everything becomes urgent. Everything is a secret. Everything changes everything.

"Nobody Is Talking About This..."

"This Changes Everything..."

"The Secret To..."

"You have Been Doing It Wrong..."

"Stop Doing This Immediately..."

It is like asking AI to write a late-night infomercial. Everything gets turned up to eleven. Every problem becomes a crisis. Every solution becomes revolutionary.

And here is the uncomfortable question we need to ask: Do we really have to exaggerate to get someone is attention?

Hype vs. Tension

There is a difference between hype and tension. They are not the same thing.

Hype tries to make something sound more important, more dangerous, more shocking or more revolutionary than it actually is. It manufactures urgency. It creates artificial stakes.

Honest tension finds the genuinely interesting part of an idea and gives the reader a reason to stop and think. It does not pretend the idea is bigger than it is. It just presents the idea in a way that makes people curious.

Here is the thing. A strong headline does not necessarily need to make someone think: "I HAVE to click this."

Sometimes a better headline makes them think:

"Wait... do I agree with that?"

"I have never thought about it that way."

"That is exactly what I have been dealing with."

"I have an opinion about this."

"Okay... now I am curious."

This Applies Everywhere

We are not just talking about blog headlines here.

As entrepreneurs, we are competing for attention across Facebook posts, LinkedIn updates, email subject lines, newsletter titles, video intros, YouTube thumbnails, community posts, sales pages and offers.

AI can help us with all of it.

But AI follows the direction we give it.

If we constantly tell AI to make something "viral," "shocking," or "impossible to ignore," we should not be surprised when it starts manufacturing drama. We are literally asking for it.

What Honest Tension Looks Like

Instead of asking AI to manufacture attention, we can use AI to find the interesting tension that already exists inside our idea.

Here are some types of honest tension worth exploring:

A question people genuinely have different opinions about. Not a rhetorical question where you already know the answer. A real question where reasonable people disagree.

Two reasonable choices with different tradeoffs. Should you focus on growing your audience or deepening your relationship with the audience you already have? Both are valid. The tension is real.

Something people commonly do that may deserve reconsideration. Not "everything you know is wrong." Just... have you thought about whether this common approach actually serves you?

A belief or assumption worth questioning. Not smashing the belief. Just asking if it is still true.

A relatable frustration. The thing your audience is quietly annoyed by but does not see anyone acknowledging.

A counterintuitive observation. The thing that sounds wrong at first but makes sense once you think about it.

A decision the reader has probably faced themselves. The fork in the road they have stood at.

A truth people recognize but do not often talk about. The thing everyone knows but nobody says out loud.

Some Examples

Let me show you the difference between overhyped and honestly curious.

Overhyped: "The Secret AI Strategy That Will 10X Your Business Overnight"

Honestly curious: "I Tried Using AI for Content for 30 Days. Here is What Actually Happened."

---

Overhyped: "Stop Making This Fatal Email Marketing Mistake Immediately"

Honestly curious: "The Email Habit That Feels Productive But Might Be Hurting Your Open Rates"

---

Overhyped: "Nobody Is Talking About This Underground Traffic Source"

Honestly curious: "Why Some Creators Are Quietly Shifting Away From Viral Content"

---

Overhyped: "The Revolutionary System That Changes Everything About Building an Audience"

Honestly curious: "Is It Better to Have 10,000 Followers or 1,000 People Who Actually Listen?"

See the difference? The overhyped versions promise transformation, secrets, and urgency. The honest versions promise a perspective, a question, or a relatable observation.

Engagement Is Not Automatically Good

Here is something we need to remember.

Comments and engagement are not automatically valuable.

Making someone angry can generate comments. Misleading someone can generate clicks. Fear can generate attention.

But that does not necessarily build the kind of audience you want.

Every headline makes a tiny promise about what comes next. If the content does not deliver what the headline implied, the reader learns something about you.

Do it once, they might forgive you.

Do it repeatedly and people may still click... but trust starts disappearing.

For entrepreneurs trying to build a long-term audience, community, newsletter or business - trust matters more than squeezing a few extra clicks out of one post.

What We Are Actually Trying to Do

The goal is not to make headlines boring.

The goal is not to remove personality.

The goal is not to avoid strong opinions.

The goal is to make the headline as interesting as the idea deserves, without pretending the idea is something it is not.

AI is making it easier than ever to create content. That includes the easy path of manufactured hype.

But it also includes the better path: using AI to find the honest curiosity and tension already hiding inside a good idea.

The Practical Question

Okay... so how do you actually get AI to create attention without automatically turning everything into hype?

I did not want to turn this article into a giant prompt library, so I put the practical Part 2 inside the SMS Community.

There, you will find the specific prompts I use to:

1. Find the real tension inside any topic

2. Create headlines that encourage curiosity and conversation without manufacturing drama

If you have been frustrated by AI-generated headlines that all sound the same or if you want to build attention without sacrificing trust, those prompts should help.

They are not secret. They are not exclusive. They are just practical.

And honestly? That is kind of the point.
